The Taste of Buffalo- Mobile Technology Edition

With mobile technology taking over every facet of any industry, it has been said to be extremely useful in media and journalism. In scenarios where journalist may not have their expensive equipment and high quality video cameras, mobile devices have taken the place of bulky, inconveniencing gear and replaced it with simplicity and capabilities to create advanced multimedia stories. With that information, the above piece has been video recorded with T-Mobile Android device that of Samsung Galaxy SII. The audio and narration has also been recorded using the Samsung phone with the built in voice recorder. All of which has been edited using Adobe Premier on a MacBook Pro laptop. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of these well-developed mobile devices, an Independent Journalist went into the field to test these abilities.
The story chosen is about the annual Taste of Buffalo that took place July 7th & 8th of 2012 in downtown Buffalo, NY near City Hall. This was the 28th year this food festival has taken place and it is said to be the largest food festival to be held over a two-day weekend as stated by presenters Tops Friendly Markets. Restaurant vendors from local areas of Buffalo, NY to Rochester, NY setup to prepare their best rendition of meals to showcase their cuisine. Thousands of patrons come to this event to get a taste of different types of food ranging from Thai, Indian, Traditional American and of course amazing BBQ. In addition to the restaurant food vendors, musicians and local dancers showcase their talents throughout the event to engage onlookers and enhance the festival.
Although the use an expensive HD camera and tripod might have enhanced the overall outcome of this piece, the mobile device met its need by capturing all components needed to create a multimedia story. The Samsung Galaxy SII has an 8-mega-pixel camera and 1080p HD video allowing crisp and clear visual elements. The built in voice recorder was precise and simplistic. In media and journalism there are times the needed equipment is not feasible, one has to be creative, attentive and efficient. Mobile technology can be used as a platform to enrich the way in which news stories are reported and viewed.
